Saturation clipping in the LHS and YIQ color spaces

چکیده
A common approach for color image processing is to rst transform the RGB image to a new color space (such as LHS and YIQ), do the processing, and then transform back to RGB space. In many applications, only the luminance component is processed, and the hue and saturation are preserved. However, when the processed values in the new color system are transformed back to RGB, the transformed values may lie outside the RGB cube. Some researchers clip the processed luminance values before transformation from the processing color space to RGB space. This can lead to a loss of luminance contrast because many pixels may be clipped to approximately the same luminance value. Instead of clipping the luminance, this paper investigates clipping the saturation component. The gamuts of two color coordinate systems, LHS and YIQ, are studied. The procedures for saturation clipping are presented for both systems. Experimental results of clipping saturation and luminance in histogram equalization are presented in the paper. The results show that the contrast of the processed image is much better when saturation clipping is used. The luminance of the image can utilize the full dynamic range, thereby resulting in improved contrast enhancement.

متن کاملGamut Clipping in Color Image Processing
Multiple color coordinate systems are usually involved in color image applications or systems. Forward and backward transformations are used to switch between color coordinate systems. The out of gamut problem emerges when the color coordinate systems’ gamut is different. Conventional approaches, including clipping R, G, B values and clipping luminance value are not ideal as they both produce s...

The first step in many techniques for processing intensity and saturation in color images keeping hue unaltered is the transformation of the image data from RGB space to other color spaces such as LHS, HSI, YIQ, HSV, etc. Transforming from one space to another and processing in these spaces usually generate a gamut problem, i.e., the values of the variables may not be in their respective interv...

|In many applications of color image processing, only modiication of the luminance component is desired. However, the commonly used coordinate systems, such as HSI, LHS, and YIQ, are not perceptually orthogonal; that is, luminance modiication can cause perceptual shifts in the hue and saturation. In this paper, we present a theoretical analysis of this phenomenon. EEcient techniques are develop...
متن کاملGeometrical methods for lightness adjustment in YCC color spaces
Lightening or darkening an image is a fundamental adjustment used to improve aesthetics or correct exposure. This paper describes new geometrical algorithms for lightness adjustment, implementing fast traversal of colors along lightnesssaturation curves, applicable when the data starts naturally in YCC space (JPEG images or MPEG videos). Here, YCC refers generically to color spaces with one lum...
